Renault Announces the Austral - Its Next SUV

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

Renault has announced the replacement for the Kadjar SUV will be named Austral.
The Austral is anticipated to be available with a choice of electrified powertrains, although a fully-electric version is unlikely.
Expected to go on sale in Spring 2022, a UK launch date has not been confirmed.

Renault has today teased its next SUV, the Australis, which will replace the Kadjar and is said to focus on technology and spaciousness.

The Australis fits into the C-Segment and will go head-to-head with the ever-popular Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, and VW T-Roc. At 4.51m long, the Australis will seat 5 and is slightly longer than the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric which is due to launch later in 2022.

Because of its closeness in size to the Megane E-Tech Electric, we're not expecting a fully-electric version of the Australis to be available. Instead, it's likely to be offered as a self-charging hybrid or plug-in hybrid. There is also a chance that the Austal could be offered with the innovative e-Power system from sister-brand Nissan, which uses a petrol engine as a generator to charge a battery which then drives the vehicle's wheels, as it's based on the same platform as the Qashqai.

According to the press release, the Australis is due to go on sale in Spring 2022, although it is unclear whether the UK will get the car then or at a later date.
